What to look for
How can you tell a good law firm from a bad one?
1. Systemised approach
When you enter into or make contact with a law firm (or any other business for that matter), the first feeling you should get is one of capability. Everybody you speak to knows what they are doing and knows the process to solving your particular problem.
2. They are on your agenda
The people who you speak to need to be focused on your issue, immediately providing information and a pathway to resolving that issue.
3. Clear communication
Some law firms believe that it is smart or necessary to fill the client with jargon and complex language. You need to feel like your advisor is easy to understand.
4. A two way street
Information needs to flow easily both ways. Do you feel like your advisor is understanding you?
5. A clear strategy
Have you been given a road map to the resolution of your problems, pointing out the important milestones and "chapters" in the story? Or do you feel like your lawyer is just reacting to circumstances as they arise?
6. Access
Do you feel like you can get access to your advisors when you need them? Are they available by phone or by email?
7. Conclusion
These are signs to look for when choosing a law firm. Your problem is too important to put up with an advisor who is not well suited to you. Finding some, any or all of these characteristics should give you the best chance of a good outcome.
